Fellow members of the rally community:

In late 2002 a group of organizers and competitors came up with the idea of forming the Western States Rally Championship. The WSRC was founded on the principle that competitors wanted to race for a championship bigger than their local regions but were unable to afford a full national championship in a country the size of the US. We were dedicated to the club-level participant, the folks who work overtime to pay for tires, who sacrifice a new refrigerator in favor of a roll cage and intercom.

The Tabor family quickly stepped up to the plate and helped make Silverstone Tyres the presenting sponsors for the series. Subaru Western Region (later Regions with an 's') stepped up as well for the worker corps, sponsoring the WSRC Worker Challenge trophies for several years before becoming the primary presenting sponsor. Jeremy at Graphicsworks provided us with series stickers for both competitors and workers. Steve at inHouseIT offered us a place to host our web site for all these years.

Since our first points-scoring event in March of 2003, we've seen a lot of people crossing zone boundaries and earning WSRC championships.

However, in recent years the regional series have grown stronger and while the economy has clobbered many of us. To compound the issue, fuel costs have gone through the roof, severly impacting travel budgets.

These factors combined to significantly diminish the clubman's ability to travel out of region to compete, such that in five points-scoring events in 2007, only Brian Scott crossed zone boundaries for a championship.

After reviewing these factors and others, the WSRC board has decided that 2007 will be the last year of the series.

We owe thanks to a lot of people and organizations, including the many sponsors already mentioned.

I wish to extend my personal thanks as well. First, to the organizers and competitors who placed their trust in me to lead the WSRC when it was being formed. Together the organizers and officers made my job easy, which in turn made it easy for everyone else.

Secondly, I need to thank Steve Johnson, former President of the SCCA, for offering the SCCA's support to the WSRC when we needed help with marketing and conference calls, and to Doug and Sue Robinson and Kurt Spitzner, who followed Steve's direction and ran with it.

Thirdly, thanks go out to all the officers over the years, including the founding group who shared the vision of a western championship, and especially to Alan Perry, who assumed the mantle of Chairman for a year to give me a much-needed break to focus on my studies.

Fourthly, to the many rally participants--competitors, workers, hams, organizers, and spectators--for making the series what it was, and for their friendship and cameraderie in the past and going into the future.

Lastly, I must thank the family and friends whom I ignored while taking care of WSRC issues, especially Donna, the woman I married.

Though the series has served its purpose and is now no longer necessary , I still encourage competitors and workers to travel to other parts of the country when their budgets and schedules allow. Not only will these experiences make you better at what you do, whether working, competing, or organizing, but you'll also meet many new friends and discover other ways to do things, some of which you may bring back to your own neighborhood or rally car. Ours is a glorious country and rallying is a great excuse to see more of it.
